Resume

Engineer (Materials/Process/Design)

More than 15 years experience in design of, process development for, and manufacturing of thin film optical coatings. Additional areas of experience include software development and mechanical design. Successful through continuous pursuit of comprehensive understanding of task, tools, and contexts; satisfied by finding ways to increase own and team effectiveness through education, training, process optimization, and by creating new tools and techniques.

SKILLS

Thin film deposition and process development (primarily reactive sputtering)
Optical thin film coating design (TFCalc, OptiLayer, courses with Baumeister and Tikhonravov)
Vacuum equipment principles and practice
Development of modeling / simulation tools
Data analysis and visualization
Mathematica (complex interactive tools, prototyping, exploration, visualization, etc.)
Excel/VBA (numerous tools for peer and production floor use)
LabVIEW (motion control and data analysis projects)
Technical writing (reports, specifications, training materials)
Teaching and training
Broad hands-on mechanical and electrical experience

WORK EXPERIENCE
Gooch and Housego California, Moorpark CA 1/2011 to present
Coating Manager
Manage coating operations of precision optics manufacturer, improving throughput by >40% per year and significantly improving yields.

Deposition Sciences, Inc., Santa Rosa CA 1997 to 6/2010
Research and Development Engineer (2004-6/2010)
Member of small team (two PhDs, myself, two technicians) focused on development projects. Conducted and documented multiple-year contract R&D program which established new materials and process capabilities, culminating in 4M$ equipment sale. As lead engineer for ongoing project to improve economy and energy efficiency of IR-halogen lamps, optimized deposition processes and coating designs, and advanced team understanding of system effects through construction of numerous interactive models. Designed novel in-vacuum mechanical apparatus as effective alternative to one much more complicated and costly. Designed and developed an automated plant-wide coating machine operating parameter statistical summary database and multiple visualization and query tools.
Project Engineer (2000-2003)
Selected for team tasked with rapidly expanding capabilities in telecom areas. Evaluated new power supplies and operating regimes for improving film quality to the level necessary for production of DWDM filters. Developed process and control simulations for evaluation of error impact and optimization of optical monitoring schemes for C...
