PROFILE
Experienced engineering leader with a broad and deep technical background, years of pilot plant and mill experience, good people skills, and keen intuition, who has a proven track record of solving difficult production problems and creating "new-to-world" products and processes.
EXPERIENCE
• 30 years of experience in the chemical and pulp and paper industry, functioning as a process engineer and research leader in mill and pilot plant settings.
• Managed and directed 15-person Pulp Research Group, including preparing operating and capital budgets, evaluating employee performance, and providing safety and technical training. This group provided support to two mills in solving production problems, ran pilot and production trials, and evaluated new pulping and pulp processing equipment for capital upgrades.
• Experienced in leading and managing large projects –
Headed a multi-disciplinary task force to design and build a recycled fiber plant. This assignment included dealing with customers, state agencies, raw material suppliers, equipment vendors, manufacturing operations, and marketing and sales departments to create a business case and plant design.
Invented, developed, and launched best-in-world printing paper product as leader of the Emerging Technologies Group. This project involved business case development, market testing, capital project engineering & startup. Granted U.S. and foreign process and product patents.
Served as lead process engineer on many capital projects, including writing the process, equipment, and product quality specifications on a $450 million bid package for new woodroom and pressure groundwood plant.
Led the research, engineering, mill training and startup on a $38 million patented process to improve the strength and cleanliness of sulfite pulp. This project saved $48 million/yr.
Selected by the company president for a marketing/manufacturing/R&D task force to find new products for an unprofitable paper machine. Fast-track effort resulted in market analysis, equipment modifications, development and launch of several products which improved profitability by $40 million/yr.
• Worked with high level corporate staff at several companies, including as a consultant. At Sappi, I was on the Corporate Technology Futures team, analyzing market trends, future technologies, and alternative businesses. Provided strategic data to the CEO and Executive Committee.
• Worked in an ISO facility and is trained in statistical process control, total quality management, and lean manufacturing. Participated in several Lean Kaizen teams.
• Designed and implemented advanced PLC and DCS process control systems for stable high-quality production at Great Northern. Used computer modeling of processes and equipment to design control systems as well as train operators. Was one of two people called from the SAPPI technology center to help rebuild the Westbrook mill after the 1996 flood because of my expert knowledge of the Foxboro I/A system.
• Invented several other processes, such as doubling the fidelity of embossers and inventing the first high-pressure caustic fusion reactor. As a private researcher, I invented a new process for manufacturing carbo...
