• As a Chief Engineer I was the technical in-charge on board. All machinery / maintenance related work is carried out under my supervision. Chief Engineer is the head of department for the Engine room staff. The chief engineer supervises the engineering department. The engineering department operates and maintains ALL the equipment on board. This includes everything from the ship's engines, electronics, and winches, to toilets and windshield wipers. A Chief Engineer is responsible for all operations and maintenance that has to do with any and all engineering equipment throughout the entire ship.
• The Chief Engineer also determines the fuel, lube oil, and other consumables required for a voyage, required inventory for spare parts, oversees fuel, lube, and slop oil transfers, prepares the engine room for inspection by local marine/safety authorities (e.g. U.S. Coast Guard), oversees all major maintenance, is required to be in the engine room during maneuvering operations, and is in charge of the engine room during emergency situations.
• He is also forms a part of shipboard management. Being a part of shipboard management means apart from planning and executing jobs also ensuring that the ship's staff, their attitude and morale is always held high and that the whole crew is motivated.
