• Performs structural calculations and develops reports based on findings. Calculations are done by utilizing simple formulas or Femap/NASTRAN (finite element software) on various foundations and platforms to be added or modified on US Navy Carriers (CVN) and Amphibious Assault Ships (LHA/LHD).
• Develops structural drawings, using AutoCAD, based on the results of structural calculations.
• Other duties include onsite surveying to confirm existing conditions in the area and surrounding area where modifications/installations will occur and corresponding with other engineering disciplines (electrical, HVAC, piping, etc.) throughout the duration of the project to avoid conflicting installations.
• Prepared technical and official correspondence with technical warrant holders (clients) of the specific project.
North Carolina DOT, Raleigh, NC – Bridge Design Unit
• Worked as an engineering assistant during the Summer of 2008.
• Learning opportunities included analysis of existing bridges for bridge ratings, specifically for curved girder bridges throughout the state of North Carolina. For each bridge analyzed, a detailed report was developed.
• Learned NCDOT design specifications for bridges.
• Developed the skills and use of MicroStation software.
