Internship at Cox Plumbing Co. in Austin, TX (Summer, 2011)
Estimating—Saw how to come up with numbers, write up a take off list of
materials, got estimates back from suppliers and learned how to put bids together.
Also learned how to derive all the timing estimates to keep a schedule.
Material Procurement—Analyzed plans to determined which materials were
needed, and created purchase orders for those materials with the suppliers.
Field Management—Learned the techniques for excavating, placing pipe, placing
backfill, and working with copper water piping. I also learned the constructive
stages of a project from a plumbing subcontractor’s view. (Rough in, top out, set
out, etc.)
Internship at John King Construction in Austin, TX (Summer, 2011)
Shadowed a superintendent, where I experienced the constructive process as
a whole. Practiced keeping the project within budget, on time, and of the highest
quality, while maintaining a safe work environment. I learned how to organize and
schedule a project effectively. I also took note to the amount of communication
required on a jobsite and how important it is to keep a good relationship with your
