PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND PROJECT OVERVIEWS

FLUOR CORP., Sugarland, Texas 2008 – 2009
Senior Process Engineer

CCR and Aromatics Complex, Valero Energy Corp. Fluor was contracted to deliver basic engineering, detailed design and equipment procurement services to Valero Energy Corp. for this major capital project at the St. Charles, Louisiana refinery. All the licensor information was supplied by UOP. The complex consisted of a CCR Platformer®, naphtha hydrotreater, Solfolane® unit, aromatics distillation section, aromatics isomerization unit, Tatory® unit and Parex® unit, as well as all off sites and utilities. Detailed design and procurement activities were conducted concurrently with the licensor packages and basic engineering in order to compress the project schedule. I worked primarily on the naphtha hydrotreater developing P&ID’s, equipment data sheets, instrument data sheets and performing detailed hydraulics calculations.

Independent Engineering Consultant, Houston, Texas 2006 – 2008
Consulting Process Engineer

Nitrogen Rejection Plant, Maranatha Petroleum. Preformed a front-end process design and optimization for a plant to reject nitrogen from a natural gas stream to meet pipeline specifications. My calculations were based on a two column, Joule-Thomson design. I delivered a complete heat and material balance and equipment requirements based on optimized conditions and configuration.

Liquid Nitrogen Plant, Ferus Inc. Preformed a front-end process design and optimization for liquid nitrogen plant. The design was based on a single column configuration. In order to produce all liquid nitrogen, the design incorporated a five stage feed compressor and two stages of expansion. I delivered a complete heat and material balance and equipment requirements based on optimized conditions and configuration.

GDS ENGINEERS, INC., Houston, Texas 2000 – 2006
Senior Process Engineer

FCC Gasoline Desulfurization Study, Dynegy Midstream Services. Performed a study to evaluate the feasibility of converting an existing butane desulphurization and isomerization unit to FCC gasoline desulphurization service. Three technologies were evaluated, Prime G+®, Scanfining® and S-Zorb®. Estimates for total capital cost, operating costs, yield and octane loss were included in the final report.

Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Study, Equilon Technologies. Participated in studies to determine the most economical configurations for several Chevron and Texaco refineries in order to meet new Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel specification. This included evaluating desulfurization technologies, refinery configurations and unit modifications. A major part for me was the simulation of an existing diesel hydrotreater, with an additional reactor, and modified preheat train.

Distillation Tower Revamp, Phillips Petroleum. Process engineer for a project to convert an existing mothballed tower to depentanizer service at the Phillips refinery in Sweeny, TX. Simulated the tower and developed new P&ID’s, checked hydraulics and specified new control valves, pumps, overhead condenser and tower trays. Check rated the relief valves and facilitated HAZOP.

Relief Valve and Flare Evaluation, bp Amoco. Lead engineer on a project to check the sizing of all the relief valves in a large HF Alkylation Unit. Evaluated the relief scenarios, calculated relief rates and conditions. Checked RV orifice sizes, as well as inlet and outlet piping. Check the flare hydraulics for several cases with Visual Flare®. Made recommendations for modifications to correct problems found as a result of the study. Also performed RV calculations for other units in the refinery including a crude unit, hydrocracker and FCCU.

Independent Engineering Consultant, Houston, Texas 1998 – 1999
Consulting Process Engineer

Refinery Reconfiguration Study, Conoco, Inc. Evaluated several possible configurations and modifications to convert a lubricant base oil refinery into a specialty products refinery. Ran simulations for new refinery units, and existing units in new services. Predicted product yields based on several configurations. Rough sized new equipment needed for two of the possible configurations, and estimated new tank farm requirements and other modifications needed to utilize existing equipment in new services.

PENNZOIL PRODUCTS COMPANY, Houston, Texas 1994 – 1998
Staff Engineer

This position, although considered general technical support for the refineries and specialty plants, dealt primarily with major project development and execution. Interfaced with the operating plants, economics and planning, as well as the laboratory and pilot plant.

Solvents Fractionation. Developed the design basis for a project to fractionate diesel and kerosene from Excel Paralubes, in Lake Charles, LA into six narrow boiling range, low aromatic solvents. The preliminary design was base on pilot plant data and simulations. A 30% cost estimate was made using major equipment specifications based on the simulation, and was used in the economic analysis.

Lube Oil Vacuum Tower Evaluation. Worked on a fast track team effort to evaluate the performance of a 68,000 BPD vacuum tower at Conoco’s Lake Charles Refinery. This tower supplies feedstock to Excel Paralubes, which was owned 50% by Pennzoil. After eight months of operation the tower performance change and experienced a sudden drop in HVGO yield. Based on operating data, test runs, simulations and tower scans, the team determined the grid wash section was damaged and made recommendations for short term and long term plans to increase gas oil production and enhance gas oil distribution. We worked closely with Excel Paralubes and Conoco refinery operations, maintenance and engineering.

White Oil Hydrotreater. Work with a team to developed the design basis for a second stage hydrotreater to replace acid treating for white oil production at the Penreco plant in Karns City, PA. Based on pilot plant data for three catalysts, conditions for the design were estimated to rough size equipment for a cost estimate. This was used for a basis of soliciting bids for front-end engineering.
