Proposals:
Led proposal effort to US Navy for a 2nd generation laser optical alignment system for TRW on the MIRACL high energy laser at White Sands Missile Range. Proposal resulted in a contract, and I led the team to design, implement and deliver the new system
Led proposal effort to the US Air Force Airborne Laser program office for Northrop Grumman to build a fully automated system for qual testing the Airborne Laser control software. Proposal resulted in project funding, and I led the team to design, implement and deliver the new system
Professional Experience:
Directed Energy Controls System Engineer
2007 to 2012 - Contract engineering position with Northrop Grumman on the Airborne Laser project. Lead engineer in the Airborne Laser Distributed Software Integration Lab at Edwards AFB. I was responsible for creating and maintaining the environment that was used to test and certify the laser control software and hardware. I proposed and got approval to design and build a fully automated test system for performing these tasks. The ATE system consisted of four computers with analog, digital, ARINC, reflective memory and Ethernet interfaces and displays that ran multithreaded, multi-core C++ on the Linux OS. I also designed system interface boards that were needed to interface the DUT to the ATE. The completed system reduced the software test and verification time by over 90%, from 6 man-days to 4 man-hours.
2005 to 2007 – Contract engineering position with Northrop Grumman for the design and delivery of a laser control system for the Airborne Laser program. I was responsible for implementing and testing the fluid and gas control loop software that was required for the production of the high energy laser beam. The system was successfully implemented, tested and installed on the Airborne Laser 747 aircraft
2002 to 2005 – Contract engineering position with TRW and Wyle Labs. I was responsible for laser control software integration and test with the laser hardware on the Airborne Laser program at the aircraft system integration site at Edwards AFB. I also provided software and hardware training and support to the test site personnel. Additionally, I spent approximately 50% of my time at the software development lab in Redondo Beach leading the effort in software continuation engineering on required changes and upgrades that were identified during the testing process at the test site.
TRW Sr. Project Engineer
1998 to 2002 - Lead software engineer on the Airborne Laser Controls and Instrumentation development program. Responsible for creating the software requirements, architecture, design, code implementation, integration and test, QC acceptance, and delivery to the laser test site at Edwards AFB. The software featured data acquisition, abort monitoring, fluid and gas valve control loops, data logging, fault management, user alert system, display system, and database components. The system consisted of embedded multithreaded Unix/Ada running on 8 Ethernet, ATM, and ARINC networked computers, 3000 analog and digital data channels, and an embedded user command language that allowed the users to specify details of how to control and monitor the laser with command sequences that they developed and loaded into the control software at the test site.
1997 to 1998 – Developed an infrared missile tracking application for the THEL high energy laser pointer/tracker subsystem. The target hardware was VME bus based with 4 DSP processors. The embedded software consisted of multiple control loops that were implemented in assembly language and optimized so that no lost processor execution cycles were encountered due to pipeline stalls. I also worked with the hardware development group during integration testing to resolve design issues with their FPGA based hardware which processed data for the embedded software application
