PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
REMOTE TECHNICAL CONSULTANT TO MDA INFORMATION SYSTEMS US
6/2012 to Present
• Continuing to support hand-off and closeout activities on the Mosquito, Restore and Phoenix programs from Mountain View, CA.
MDA INFORMATION SYSTEMS US (FORMERLY ALLIANCE SPACESYSTEMS)
Pasadena, CA
9/2006 to 6/2012
Project Engineer
• Lead Engineer for Mosquito – a man-portable automated Dynamic Cone Penetrometer for the Air Force Research Laboratory, MDA Information Systems’ first non-space product line.
• Responsible for team of ten, including 4 senior mechanical engineers, and $1M project budget, as well as customer interface, requirements definition, system level design, PCB design and embedded code, mechanical, manufacturing, assembly and testing oversight, scheduling and internal reporting.
• Produced all major program documents, including: requirements, test plans, test reports, user manuals, repair manual, verification and validation matrix, end item data package and final report.
• Streamlined internal MDA procedures for non-spaceflight hardware, including changes to manufacturing, quality, assembly and test to dramatically reduce program costs (estimated at 20% of contact value).
Electrical/Test Engineer
• Designed and oversaw the manufacturing, assembly, testing and troubleshooting of electrical and thermal subsystems on the Engineering Development and Flight Prototype Units of the FREND, two meter, 7 degree-of-freedom, robotic arm and related ground support equipment for the Naval Research Laboratory/DARPA.
• Successfully created test plans, ran and managed tests and wrote test reports for: thermal vacuum, dynamometer, EMI/EMC, drop, environmental and system validation tests for multiple projects.
• Designed LabVIEW VI’s for data acquisition and automation to support the testing of various spaceflight and prototype systems.
• Thermal and avionics lead engineer for the Restore (NASA’s Goddard) and Phoenix (NRL) robotic arm programs, two different on-orbit servicing missions. Worked with customers to define requirements and interface control documents and oversaw design.
• Did circuit design and layout for numerous PCB’s; including a full embedded system, programmed in LabVIEW embedded, for Mosquito, handling numerous peripherals and user interface.
• Motor control and motion planning for multiple projects.
• Created all requirements and oversaw the physical design and manufacturing of 11+ meter long flex cables for over 250 signals for both the FREND and MSL robotic arms. Signals included: motor and joint telemetry, motor power, heater, PRT, camera and other auxiliary signals.
• MDA Technical lead on numerous multi-organization design and troubleshooting groups.
Project Manager
• Selected over nine more senior MDA personnel to lead the emergency repair of NASA’s $16M Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity’s robotic arm.
• Developed the manufacturing and validation test operational plans in close coordination with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s (JPL) engineering staff for the disassembly, repair and reassembly of major arm components done at JPL’s Spacecraft Assembly Facility (SAF).
•Managed the efforts of 15 JPL and MDA personnel at JPL’s class 10,000 clean room and thermal vacuum testing facilities, completing a rework and test process that originally took 20 weeks to 4.
• Delivered the mission-critical-path project ahead of a zero margin schedule and on budget, allowing JPL to start arm/rover system level testing on time.
BSST (NOW GENTHERM)
Irwindale, CA 10/2003 to 8/2006
Project Engineer
• Designed and oversaw the assembly and testing for heating, cooling and power generation thermoelectric prototype systems for major corporations and the military; including a wine cooler, electronics chassis cooler, super market meat counter cooling unit and softball-sized natural gas-burning power generator.
• Designed and handled customer interface, system requirements and verification testing of Personal Climate Control vest for helicopter pilots for DARPA, which was delivered on time and budget.
• Created the thermoelectric and system level MATLAB models and designed and optimized the thermoelectric sub system for the Herman Miller’s C2 personal heating/cooling system.
Research Engineer
• Created BSST’s Air-to-Air and Air-to-Solid thermoelectric heat exchanger modeling prog...
