EXPERIENCE
Mr. Levinthal has 16 years of experience in archeology, architectural history and cultural resource management in 14 states in the Mid-Atlantic, West, Mountain West, Midwest, Northwest, South and Southeast regions of the United States. He is qualified under the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications (36 CFR 61) for the positions of Archeologist, Architectural Historian and Historian. Mr. Levinthal has broad experience in cultural resource management compliance projects for private, state, and federal clients, as well as public outreach, cultural resource and historical interpretation, archeological volunteer coordination and university level teaching experience in Archeology and Cultural Anthropology.
• In 2010, Mr. Levinthal completed the ACHP's The Section 106 Essentials course.
• In 2011 he was presented with the Lower Eastern Shore Heritage Council's Tee O'Connor Heritage Professional Award for Archeology due to public outreach and education efforts.
• In 2012 he was nominated for and accepted a position on the Board of the Rackliffe House Trust, a group guiding the establishment of a non-profit museum with a goal of the effective interpretation of Native American and plantation life on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
EMPLOYMENT SUMMARY
2012 – Present In-House Consulting Archeologist with Maryland State Highway Administration, Baltimore, MD via The Ottery Group, Inc., Olney, MD. Responsibilities include archeological review of proposed transportation related developments.
2011 – Present Archeologist, Architectural Historian and Historian, The Ottery Group, Inc., Olney, MD. Responsibilities include management of cultural resource staff and projects for public and private clients, development of budgets and proposals, client relations and staff management. Specific duties also include serving as Principal Investigator and Field Director on cultural resource projects in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Louisiana, Iowa, Idaho and SHPO/Client consultation, public outreach, and other related activities.
2009 – 2011 Senior Archeologist/Senior Architectural Historian/Historian/Project Manager/Principal Investigator, Advantage Environmental Consultants (AEC), Jessup, MD. Responsibilities included management of all cultural resources contracts (archeology and architectural history) for private clients in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Specific duties included oversight responsibilities, SHPO/Client consultation, supervision of fieldwork and research, artifact analysis, and report preparation. All work was closely coordinated with SHPO and clients for compliance with federal, state and county requirements for cultural resource management.
2007- 2009 Senior Archeologist/Principal Investigator, Circa~CRM, Williamsburg, VA. Responsible for management of cultural resources contracts for public and private clients in Virginia. Responsibilities included oversight responsibilities, supervision of fieldwork and research, artifact analysis, and report preparation. All work was closely coordinated with SHPO and clients for compliance with federal, state and county requirements for cultural resource management.
2004 - 2007 Field Director, Principal Investigator, Independent Contractor, Ocean Pines, MD. Independent cultural resources management contractor responsible for supervising and performing all aspects of fieldwork, research, artifact analysis, and report production for several cultural resource management firms in the Mid-Atlantic region. Clients included TRC, Archeological Testing and Consulting (ATC) and the Ottery Group, among others. Projects were located in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Virginia. All work was closely coordinated with contractors and clients for compliance with federal, state and county requirements for cultural resource management.
2003- 2004 Senior Archeologist, Associated Cultural Resource Experts (ACRE), Littleton, CO. Supervised and conducted archeological investigations, historic research and artifact analysis and prepared reports for public and private clients in Colorado, Nevada, and Wyoming. All work was closely coordinated with SHPO and clients for compliance with federal, state and county requirements for cultural resource management.
2002- 2003 Architectural Historian, R.C. Goodwin and Associates, Frederick, MD. Conducted architectural surveys of and historic research on Maryland State Parks properties. Supervised crews, conducted fieldwork and prepared reports. All work was closely coordinated with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Historical Trust.
2000-2002 Greenways Coordinator, Department of Recreation Parks and Tourism, Wicomico County, MD. Responsible for planning an interpretive trail system incorporating historical and environmental resources. Work was closely coordinated with Wicomico County Recreation and Parks, Wicomico County Planning, Zoning and Community Development, Wicomico County Roads Division and the Maryland Historical Trust.
1999-2000 Archeologist, Edward Otter, Salisbury, MD. During Graduate studies, part-time field crew member responsible for assisting with Phase I investigations, historic research and laboratory analysis. Also performed Teacher’s Assistant duties and lead academic archeological project.
1996-1998 Archeological Field Technician, Hunter Research, Inc. Trenton, NJ. Field crew member responsible for assisting with Phase I investigations, Phase II evaluations and Phase III data recoveries and laboratory analysis of artifacts recovered from Paleoindian through early 20th century sites in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York.
1994 Archeological Lab Technician, John Miler and Associates, West Chester, PA. Temporary laboratory technician recommended by West Chester University faculty. Responsibilities included the processing and analysis of stoneware kiln material from historic sites in western Pennsylvania.
SELECTED PROJECT EXPERIENCE
• Architectural Survey and Determination of National Register of Historic Places Eligibility, Baltimore Gas & Electric, Melvale Waterless Gas Holder. Served as Architectural Historian. Mr. Levinthal performed architectural survey and completed forms including a recommendation of National Register of Historic Places eligibility regarding an early 20th century gas holder facility in the City of Baltimore, Maryland. Survey and forms were completed for Baltimore Gas & Electric in order to satisfy State of Maryland requirements prior to the demolition of the gas storage facility.
