2002 to 2011 Captain & Training Officer
West Barnstable Fire Department W. Barnstable, MA
The West Barnstable Fire Department is a combination fire department with five career firefighter/paramedics and 45 volunteer firefighters and EMT's. The department responds to approximately 650 emergency calls each year and has a 3/6 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO).
As Captain, I lead and supervised two of our four Groups in the department. Each Group consists of one career firefighter/paramedic and eight call/volunteer firefighter/EMT's that are on duty eight nights each month. In addition to fire suppression, hazardous materials mitigation and emergency medical service at the ALS level, I was responsible for annual performance reviews of all group members, maintaining discipline and order, purchasing supplies and equipment and group level training.
As the department Training Officer I was responsible for planning and implementing 40 department-wide drills and classes each year. Part of this task includes scheduling outside instructors and programs. I was also responsible for ensuring the staff’s compliance with EMT continuing education and recertification.
In addition to my duties as Captain and Training Officer, I worked directly with the Chief with administrative obligations and I also served on the department’s Career Staff Hiring Committee, Volunteer Staff Hiring Committee and Promotional Committee.
