Experimental Physics: Conducted experiments and gathered data on electrostatic breakdown in insulating materials considered for use on the NASA James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Experiments were carried out inside a vacuum chamber at varying time length scales and temperatures in the range of 150K to 300K.
Data Acquisition and Analysis: Used LabVIEW for instrument control and data acquisition to conduct tests and gather data for the breakdown electric field experiments. The data analyses were completed in MathCAD, Excel, and IGOR. Automated curve fitting helped derive a time and temperature dependent model for the electrostatic field strength of the insulating materials being tested.
Instrument Calibration and Documentation: Revamped the experiment apparatus used for the electrostatic breakdown experiments. Nominally utilized for high voltage (~10 kV)/high electric field experiments, the apparatus was successfully modified for use at low voltage (~10’s mV)/low electric field applications. Modifications made over the course of four years were documented and schematics designed in Visio to provide a clear analysis to troubleshoot the system.
High Vacuum Systems: The experiments were conducted under high vacuum (10-6 Torr) within a custom made vacuum chamber, the Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Chamber. The ESD chamber was the experiment apparatus, mentioned above, used to conduct the electrostatic breakdown tests.
