Worked in Utilization Management to reduce patient length of stays and readmission specifically for COPD exacerbation patients. Interviewed patients, gathered data from hospitalists and correlated readmission to specific factors including complication of a previously treated disease, and lack of outpatient resources among other issues that prevented patient recovery. Learned valuable interpersonal skills and teamwork skills necessary to both interview patients and work with professional hospitalists.

Shadowed Robert Crausman, M.D., for 21 hours and observed day to day activities of primary care ambulatory facility. Observed a number of urgent care cases, gained valuable patient contact experience and observed proper specimen handling in on site laboratory. Worked with a team of undergraduate engineers and leading researcher at the University of Maryland to develop a novel microfluidic chip capable of screening blood platelet transfusion samples for bacterial contamination via Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction. Performed market analysis on currently available technology, worked extensively in microfluidic chip prototype design, and conducted experimental studies to improve DNA capture efficiency of product. Shadowed Joseph Renzulli, M.D., and observed 20 hours of urological surgical procedures. These included numerous robotic prostatectomy cases. Examined the use of the DaVinci Surgical System in real time and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of this system in the field of urology. Learned the importance of consulting a physician when designing a medical product to be used in the medical industry.
