—PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE—
UTC Aerospace Systems at NASA-JSC (Electronics Engineer) Feb 2005 – Feb 2013
Designer - Analog and digital electronics, electrical, mechanical and optical systems via software and lab test.
Printed Circuit Boards – EMI and thermal mitigation, multi-layered, staking and conformal coating, testing.
Software used - Altium, Orcad and Protel. Troubleshot multilayered PCB electro-magnetic and thermal issues.
Fabricator – circuit boards, cable harness, fiber optics cables and connections, power supplies. Built systems using ICs, discrete components, hardware, connectors, cable and wire. Specialized in MIL-Spec connectors and cable.
Mechanical Integrator - switch panels, handcontrollers, helmet mounted displays, man-machine sensors. Built systems using gears, springs, bearings, clutches, belts, pulleys and chains. Used machine tooling. Performed force testing. Troubleshooter - electrical, electronics, mechanical and optical systems utilizing oscilloscopes, meters, spectrum analyzers, power supplies, signal generators and communication & network analyzers, time domain reflectometers (wired and optical), static control, temperature, light meter. Performed calibrations.
Testing and Maintenance - electronics, electrical, optical and mechanical systems. Maintained records.
Specialized in wired and wireless voice intercommunications and video systems. Robotics and automation systems, avionics, test-beds, 3D tracking, motion and motor control, crew training, 3DCAD systems, compilers and handcontrollers.
Documentation - created user manuals, maintenance and repair manuals, 3D diagrams such as breakdown exploded diagrams. Generated test procedures and software. Created schematics and PCB layouts as well as block diagrams.
Operations – Telemetry, astronaut crew training simulators and simulated on-orbit conditions for crew training.
Manager - lab operations and personnel. Created and managed budgets, training, and safety. In addition, managed project from fruition to completion and often with continued support. Reported directly to upper NASA management.
Entrepreneur - drummed up new business. Investigated potential sources of work. Coordinated with customers to develop requirements, plan budgets and schedules, training & support plans. Searched for needs to be filled by our lab.
Safety and Quality standards developed as well as monitoring and controlling safety procedures. Hazard mitigations. Certified - solder thru-hole and SMD, terminate and splice fiber-optics, build cables and harnesses, conformal coat, perform electronics quality inspections, operate light machine tools, drive a forklift, operate a man-lift, operate a gantry crane, work in confined entry, perform AED/CPR, fire warden and medical first aid treatment, fly aircraft, familiar with Fulton Recovery System, familiar with major aircraft subsystems.
Procurement of lab supplies and safety PPE, RF allocation management, test equipment calibration, inventory.
Training and Mentoring of coop students and interns. Assisted public affairs with outreach programs to educate public.
Contracts Support in contract compete award. Also generated RFPs and contract specifications for procurements.
Accomplishments:
Designed, built and maintained portable switch panels and handcontrollers for desktop PC simulation. These systems reduced the cost of using costly and complex simulators for most of training for spaceflight. Other systems - tracking, docking, robotics, vehicle, eclipse, virtual reality. Designed cable harness for Chariot Mars Rover Prototype.
Served as Lead Electronics Engineer for our Space Station Canadarm full fidelity and scale mockup trainer. Designed and built a ‘Mission Control’ style console, spacecraft simulator stations, voice inter-comm system and spacecraft video system. Generated most system documentation. Assisted in mission crew training operations to prepare for spaceflight.
Managed a general purpose design and fabrication facility that encompassed 4 engineers and 4 technicians for our division we supported. This facility performed tiger team troubleshooting as well as general support for electronics for the Automation and Robotics activities at NASA-JSC. Direct contact with upper management for priority work. Performed scheduling, procurement, test equipment calibration, RF coordination with FCC, property control and training.
Reused hundreds of thousands of dollars of excessed hardware from other facilities before they were disposed of, including electronics components, test equipment, IT hardware, cable, handcontrollers, avionics and CCTV hardware. Much of this equipment I rebuilt durin...
