Curriculum Vitae

Behzad (BJ) offers 20 years plus process engineering and supervision experience with major EPC firms and 5 years as PMT/PMC process/technical lead. Behzad has demonstrated skills on all phases of project life cycle associated with downstream oil, gas, chemicals, petrochemicals, gasification, and alternate energy, including technology assessment, conceptualization, pre-FEED, FEED, detailed engineering, procurement and construction support, redesign or upgrade, pilot plants, demo plants, and first commercial plants. Project experience range from small capital improvement projects to complex, first-of-a-kind, fast track, 400 million USD as built and up to 7 billion USD pre-FEED packages. Experience includes projects using gated approach, and projects based in Middle East, North America, South America, and East Asia. Supervised teams of up to 20 engineers.

Behzad has been responsible for approval or issuance of heat & material balances, design basis, process description, PFDs, PI&Ds, metallurgical diagrams, equipment datasheets, instrument datasheets, relief load summary, complex loop control narratives, cause and effect tables, utility summary, emission summary, line list, battery limit conditions, tie-in list, HAZOP, licensor package technical evaluation, and vendor package review and approval.

Behzad has demonstrated skills in working with research in transfer of technology from concept/laboratory scale to engineered commercial success with emphasis on application of fluidized and fixed bed reactors. He has played the key rule in technical assessment, conceptualization, pre-FEED, FEED, and EPC of many emerging fluidized and fixed bed technologies, and has personally led the design of the reaction section and associated equipment for four commercialized processes that included pilot/demo and commercial scale plant, all using fluidized bed system. Working closely with the client’s research team, Behzad has demonstrated capabilities of fast-tracking new technologies to commercial operation using fit-for-purpose engineering solutions that have repeatedly resulted in successful start-ups.

Employment History:

Consultant (2011 - Present):
Aeroject Rocketdyne Energy Group (USA): Process design and scale-up support on gasification
Confidential (China): Pilot plant design review for a new coal to liquid process
Confidentail (USA): Acted as full-time PMT lead process engineer supporting FEED and E design of a new fluid bed technology. Responsibility also included upgrade and debottleneck of client's existing plant through analysis of plant data, and acting as PM/PE on small to medium size capital improvement projects. Time spent 50/50 at client and EPC firm facility. EPC firm: confidential

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Energy Group, Los Angeles, CA (2009 – 2011):
PMT lead process engineer responsible for demo/commercial plant design of Rocketdyne compact gasification and other break through energy processes. Technologies involved included zero emission oxy-combustion, biowaste conversion, and gasification. Acted as the client technical liaison with FEED contractor. EPC firms: Jacobs, Fluor

GreatPoint Energy, Chicago, IL (2007 – 2009):
PMT lead process engineer responsible for technical design of GreatPoint Energy’s first commercial catalytic coal gasification for pipeline methane. Acted as the client technical liaison with technology engineering firm partner and the FEED contractor. Process lead on a 7 billion USD class IV cost estimate study. EPC firms: Fluor, Shaw/Badger Technologies, URS

Fluor, Aliso Viejo, CA (1988 – 2007):
Principal Process Engineer. Refinery, chemicals, petrochemicals, and alternate energy projects. Over 80 projects ranging from concept to EPC, including 400 million USD silicon EPC project and several 1 billion plus USD pre-FEED/FEED studies. Scaled-up four new technologies successfully to fist commercial plant.

Badger Engineers, Cambridge MA (1981 – 1988):
Lead Process Engineer. Refinery, chemicals, petrochemicals, food, and pharmaceutical projects. Over 20 projects ranging from concept to EP ranging from $55 to $150 million USD.

Energy Resources Inc, Cambridge, MA (1979 – 1981):
R&D and pilot plant engineer. Biomass gasification and solid fuel combustion. Issued design package for a commercial biowaste to charcoal facility

Significant experience (Company/Client, Technology):

Confidential Project
Acting as a full time imbedded engineer, Behzad has led the process design efforts related to commercializing a new fluidized bed process with emphasis on the design of the commercial reactor and associated equipment

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne (gasification, solid fuel combustion)
Pre-FEED design and cost estimate for a coal gasification to fuel gas plant for a North America client

Pre-FEED design and cost estimate for a zero emission pet coke combustion concept plant for generation of steam for enhanced oil recovery for a California based client

Behzad worked with design engineers to complete the design of a commercial size (3,000 TPD) compact gasifier using pilot plant data obtained from GTI facility

Behzad evaluated economics of 600 psig gasifier lock hopper feed system alternates to identify the optimal design from economics and reliability

GreatPoint Eenergy (gasification)
Behzad had overall process responsibility for commercial plants using GPE's solid fuel to methane gasification process (hydromethanation), including scale-up and design of the reactor and associated feed, overhead solid recovery, and catalyst recovery and recycle systems

Behzad managed a 7 billion USD pre-FEED cost estimate for a 12,000 TPD pet coke to methane plant based on US Gulf Coast

REC (solar grade silicon)
Behzad co-led a team of process engineers who concurrently developed design improvements to the existing demo-scale plant, while developing the commercial project specifications. Within 7 months, Behzad’s team completed the Pre-FEED and FEED phase for the first commercial plant project and produced 85% completed P&IDs in support of a class II cost estimate. Behzad led the team through the detailed engineering phase and procurement support while assisting with redesign of the existing demo plant and developing the design of the commercial reactor. The duration of the commercial plant project, from kick-off to start-up was 3.5 years. Project kicked off late 2007.

Gas to liquids (FPSO based)
Behzad was part of a team that developed cost and economics associated with a concept based FPSO deep sea gas to liquids facility comparing Sasol's with Synthroleum's. Behzad used public information to estimate yields, provided sizing for the reactors and associated equipment, and assisted in balance of plant design, layout, and cost reviews

Gas to liquids (MTO)
Behzad developed the design for the reactor section and associated equipment for a concept methanol to olefin plant using published information on Mobil technology. This information was used for cost estimate in support of and economic a...
