ASSOCIATE CIVIL ENGINEER
PAUL C. RIZZO ASSOCIATES, PITTSBURGH, PA (03/08-11/11)
RIZZO Projects Include:
Site Selection/Site Characterization/PSAR– Confidential Client, Akkuyu, Turkey:
Subsurface Investigation for Nuclear PSAR – DELTA Energy, The Netherlands, Europe:
Site Selection/Site Characterization/PSAR and ER – Confidential Client, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates:
I served as a Field Engineer at these large Nuclear Power Plant site locations. The work plans consisted of a subsurface and environmental investigation for submittal of a PSAR (Preliminary Safety Analysis Report) to the Regulatory Authority for the siting of a Nuclear Power Plant. Advanced field activities included geotechnical logging of critical reactor centerline borings up to 200-meters deep and collecting core samples for detailed laboratory analysis. Other field activities included several monitoring well tests (step tests, pump tests, and slug tests), surveying, archeological studies, environmental studies, and tidal studies. All subcontractors underwent a commercial grade dedication plan to be in compliance with the current international standards. Office responsibilities included geotechnical report and calculation writing for the PSAR report.
Wyaralong Dam– QLD, Brisbane, Australia:
As a Quality Control Field Representative, I was responsible for the quality assurance of the laboratory testing and inspection on a large Roller Compacted Concrete Dam in eastern Australia. Assuring laboratory technicians perform all required testing both in the on-site lab and at the placement. Some tests includes: RCC nuclear density testing, stock pile temperate monitoring, material grading, cement & fly ash physical and chemical properties, specific gravity & absorption, unit weight, air content, etc. Other responsibilities include reviewing RCC aggregate data and making required adjustments to mix design. Also responsible for creating a monthly RCC Report of compiled test results and the prolific trends that develop.
Smithland Hydroelectric Project – American Municipal Power, Smithland, Kentucky, USA
As an Engineering Associate, I conducted numerous slope stability and seepage estimates for the 100 feet deep powerhouse excavation adjacent to the Smithland Dam on the Ohio River. Slope stability computations were performed in GSTABL7 after estimating drained and undrained strengths of sandy and clayey material. I submitted several calculations and reports to assist in the excavation design.
Consol Robinson Run Mine – Nicholson Construction, Cuddy, Pennsylvania, USA
As an Engineering Associate, I conducted field work and the engineering support on a slope stability remediation of a hillside that supports an overland conveyor. The scope of this subsurface exploration included a reconnaissance of the site, drilling of three geotechnical borings, installation of a piezometer and an inclinometer, laboratory testing program, an engineering evaluation of the subsurface materials, cursory site-geology study, evaluation and plotting of settlement, slope stability analyses, and assistance in developing the conceptual designs for stabilizing the slope. I coordinated all drilling and laboratory efforts and performed the on-site soil and rock classification. In the office, I utilized the computer program GSTABL7 to back-calculate the shear strength of the subsurface material to ultimately develop conceptual design alternatives for stabilizing the slope. I also prepared the final geotechnical report for the client.
Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir – AmerenUE, Lesterville, Missouri, USA:
As a field inspector, I worked as a Construction Supervisor overseeing the placing of RCC on the various mono-lift sections of the new dam. Responsibilities were to assure that the construction of the new dam were performed in compliance with the project specifications and to inform all inconsistent issues to the Project Contractor. Field reports were documented and provided a chronological timeline of the daily events were provided.
Levy County NPP Foundation Considerations – Sargent & Lundy / Progress Energy, Florida, USA:
As an Engineering Associate, I assisted in the Commercial Grade Dedication Plan at the Fall Line Testing and Inspection, LLC laboratory in Farmington, Missouri. The quality control program was a part of the RCC Test Pad for the proposed Nuclear Power Plant site in Levy County. The plan consisted of auditing the proper qualifications of personnel performing tests, assuring all materials and testing equipment were configured and calibrated to follow current ASTM Standards, and to implement tha...
