CORE COMPETENCIES DEMONSTRATED
IMMUNEXPRESSO, TECHNION UNIVERSITY, ISRAEL (Research of a cytokine-cell interaction knowledgebase, funded by NIH grants)
Consultant 2013 - 2014
• Big Data: Large amount of immunology literature published by reductionist techniques needs to be integrated to uncover the complexity of the immune system. Called upon to design a scalable information extraction system equipped with natural language processing. Original architecture could only process three years of summary data. The proposed architecture using the Hadoop ecosystem demonstrated a solution that could scale to the entire fifty years of full research data – a 1000-fold increase in scale and performance.
DOUBLE LINE PARTNERS, AUSTIN TX (Education data consulting firm focused on K-12 public education)
Data Architect 2012 - 2013
• Data Governance: Lack of robust quality control mechanism in the integration process of student data across the state of Texas led to confusions and delayed dashboard updates. Called upon to develop an automated process to isolate problematic data, retrieve root-cause errors, and prioritize data issues. The solution was deployed to 7 school districts within 4 months, impacting over 9,000 educators, and representing nearly 200,000 students. This framework empowers data stewards to monitor data quality and consistency with actionable guidance. It became the blueprint for all subsequent projects with other education agencies such as the Delaware Department of Education and the Denver Public Schools
ALL WEB LEADS, AUSTIN TX (Online lead generation providers to the US Insurance industry)
BI Principal Architect 2011 - 2012
• Data Warehousing: In the wake of multiple years with inconsistent systems and lack of established best practices, quality and data availability issues developed in the BI team. Partner data integration projects were developed one at a time causing redundancies and lost opportunities. Immediately conceived and developed a reusable ETL system. Within 2 months, delivered a flexible and scalable framework that can support an unlimited number of data sources. This framework significantly improved accuracy and availability and reduced time-to-deployment from several days to a few hours.
ENGAUGE, AUSTIN TX (FORMERLY DIRECT IMPACT, Marketing & data analytics)
Director of Data Services 2008 - 2011
• Business Intelligence (BI): Commissioned to lead a joint effort between Best Buy for Business (BBFB) and Direct Impact (DI); the largest project DI had ever won. BBFB was unable to build an effective BI platform due to multiple complicated, large, and non-standardized data feeds. Researched abnormalities and inconsistencies in the data and developed interactive reporting and dashboard facilities. Despite 5 highly duplicated very large data sources, completed this end-to-end project on time in 4 months. This system provided such valuable strategic insight for BBFB decisions that it was used by other divisions within Best Buy.
• Process Optimization: Resource-intensive data warehouse projects caused project overruns and clients were insisting on more frequent updates. Conceived and led an initiative to automate the update process thus increasing frequency and quality of updates. Reduced report delivery time from 3 days to overnight and cycle time from monthly to weekly. Tripled data warehouse developer productivity within a year; increasing profitability.
• Departmental Turnaround: Inherited a dysfunctional Data Services (DS) team; quality and on-time delivery issues led to attrition, plaguing Sr. Management. Within 2 months, recruited, established and led training, and mentored a new team. Within 4 months, the Data Services team was fully functioning and able to deliver high quality work with great satisfaction from other departments. The systems developed during this achievement reduced on-boarding processes and delivered standardized and documented procedures.
• Technology Communication: Communication issues developed between client representatives, analysts, and developers causing confusion. Created and introduced consistent communication tools; issue-tracking to maintain encode, and standardized fundamental terminologies. Within 60 days, communication issues were eliminated and costs reduced. This event created greater quality and faster development of data warehouses and analytics capabilities.
