Dear Sir/Madam:
I am very interested in an engineering position in St. Louis. I have attached my resume for your review. Given my undergraduate experience and my professional experience as a project engineer so far, I feel that I am ready to excel in this position at your company. I was born in Champaign, Illinois and grew up in Auburn, Illinois just a little South of Springfield. I attended high school in St. Louis, Missouri and went to Missouri University of Science and Technology (Formerly the University of Missouri‐Rolla). I graduated from MS&T with a Bachelor’s of Science in Mining and Mineral Engineering with a minor in Explosives Engineering. My current position is very rewarding, but I would like to move closer to my family in St. Louis.
During my time in college I was fortunate enough to receive two internships from Arch Coal, Inc. The first summer was spent in Wright, Wyoming at the Black Thunder coal mine. During my time there, I was able to work with the engineering department on numerous jobs and projects. My supervisor put me in charge of looking over the drill and blast operations and filing their shot reports. I also work with my supervisors to plan and budget for a drag-line and two shovels. This involved calculating drag-line volumes as well as 3D bench design. I was also involved in surveying on a weekly basis. My second internship was with Mingo Logan Coal at the Mountaineer II Mine in Sharples, West Virginia. I spent the majority of my summer underground working in several different parts of the mine. I spent a lot of time surveying and getting familiar with how underground coal mines operate on a daily basis. I also worked with another engineer and conducted a full ventilation survey of the mine. I used this data to update our ventilation model on VNET PC. One of my other big projects was a several month long time study of a continuous miner section to see what changes could be made in order to operate more efficiently and to identify any problems that the crews were having.
In my current position as project engineer I am exposed to several different parts of the operation. My day to day job involves keeping track of daily production and our variance to monthly and quarterly budgets. I am in charge of writing our weekly Operations report, and I work with the maintenance and production bosses to explain any variances or delays in production. I handle most of the mine site projects that involve drilling, de-watering, ventilation, permitting gas wells, and any type of updates or changes to plans that need to be made. I work to put together the bid packages and compare quotes from companies. From there I put in the requests for funds and send the purchase orders to the companies. I supervise the contractors while they are on site and keep track of their time sheets and work completed. I work with our resident engineer to draw our projections as mine plans are changed, and work with him to make our forecast spreadsheets. A good portion of my time involves mine planning and looking at the economic feasibility of whatever changes are suggested. I am also responsible for putting together our monthly, quarterly, and annual budgets. This includes all production planning, capital expenses for projects and new materials, and keeping track of our reserves on our mineral leases. I attend the weekly foreman work meeting and try to stay involved in the day to day mining operation as much as possible. I also attend the weekly plant meeting which has allowed me to gain exposure to the processing and sales side of the operation.
Sometimes youth is viewed as a negative characteristic in the workplace, but I see it as nothing but positive. I am a very organized and efficient worker that brings positive energy into the work place when given the opportunity. I am fully aware that most of the men working underground have been in this line of work their entire life and are full of valuable knowledge that I am always anxious to listen to and learn from. I am a person that always wants to learn and share my knowledge with others if it can help make things easier and more efficient. I’ve always had great communication skills and my time in the Air Force, although short, sharpened my presentation skills when it comes to giving briefings. I am very easy to get along with, and enjoy getting to know new people. My short term goal is to work towards getting my MBA or masters in engineering. Long term I would like to work towards getting more involved with management. I continue to live my life by the Air Force core values, “Integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do”. Integrity is the most important value that a person can have, and as an engineer I challenge myself to have strong more principals in everything I do. I have proven in my current position that I am willing to put the job first and work over 50 hours a week. I use Microsoft excel and AutoCAD every single day and I enjoy traveling. I know there will be a transition period from the mining industry, but if you are looking for a dedicated and hardworking young engineer with project management and long range planning and budgeting experience, I am the perfect candidate. I would like to thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting and interviewing with you to show you that I am the right candidate for this job.
Respectfully,
Jim
