As a member of the hydrofisheries group, designed numerous specialized structures and facilities to protect, preserve, and propagate fish populations in Washington State, as well as maintain and improve worker safety at dam and hatchery facilities, with a clientele primarily consisting of public utilities along the Columbia River.
• Constructed a 3D finite element model of a combined generation and spillway unit dam with irregular geometry used to conduct a risk-informed seismic assessment of public safety within the inundation area downstream of the dam.
• Designed a custom-fabricated set of large removable screens to prevent fish and debris from entering a newly installed intake pipe carrying 540 cfs of water to a fish ladder.
• Performed structural evaluations and preliminary inspections of numerous lift beams and below-the-hook lifting devices to determine their continued safe usage according to current ASME design criteria and Washington State laws. Implemented testing schedule and certification efforts for said lifting devices.
• Developed concepts for and designed several sets of wire rope arrays strung across the downstream ends of several dams to prevent avian predation of migrating salmon.
• Designed pipe networks and open channels; steel and aluminum structures; and water-bearing reinforced concrete structures for a state-of-the-art fish hatchery with the goal of producing over a million salmon while minimizing human handling.
• Designed and coordinated construction of several fall-protection and fall-arrest fixtures to improve dam worker safety per AISC and ASME design criteria, as well as OSHA and WISHA safety regulations using pre-fabricated systems as well as custom-fabricated installations.
